Wheel balancing weights – clip-on, adhesive and calibration
Wheel balancing weights even out the mass of a wheel after tyre fitting. The balancer shows how many grams to add and where. You hammer the weight onto a steel rim flange or stick it inside an alloy rim.
This category contains clip-on weights for steel rims (5, 10 and 20 g, 100 pieces per pack), steel adhesive weights for alloy rims (a SLIM roll of 500 × 5 g with blue tape and an FE 3 kg set in strips of 4 × 5 g + 4 × 10 g) and calibration weights for wheel balancers, 100 g and 200 g.
Clip-on or adhesive weights – choosing by rim type
The right weight depends on the rim and the position the balancer shows:
- clip-on (hammer-on) weights – for steel rims; the clip goes over the flange; fit it with a hammer or weight pliers,
- adhesive (stick-on) weights – for alloy rims; stuck to the inner surface of the rim, so they stay out of sight,
- weight size – 5 g and 10 g segments give 5 g steps; 20 g weights suit heavier SUV and van wheels.
Never hammer a clip-on weight onto an alloy rim: the clip scratches the paint and the flange. Clean and degrease the spot before sticking: on a dirty or wet surface the tape holds poorly and the weight can fall off while driving.
Calibration weight for wheel balancers
A calibration weight has a known mass. Fit it at the step given in the calibration procedure in the machine manual. Choose the mass your balancer requires: 100 g or 200 g. If the same wheel gives different readings, check the centring cones and the quick-release nut before calibrating, because a poorly centred wheel gives a false reading.
