If the carriage of your car lift sticks, makes noise or jerks while lifting, the most common cause is worn car lift slider blocks. In hot weather the problem gets worse - the steel of the column expands, the clearances change and worn slider blocks no longer guide the carriage the way they should.

What slider blocks do in a car lift and why they wear out
Slider blocks (also called guide blocks) are components made of engineering plastic (most often nylon, polyamide or POM) that guide the carriage inside the lift column. They do one thing: they replace metal-to-metal friction with metal-to-plastic friction. Thanks to them the carriage glides quietly, evenly and without sticking - and the column does not wear out.
They wear out because they are a consumable part - by design they are meant to take all the frictional contact upon themselves. The rate of wear depends on:
- the number of lifting cycles per day,
- the weight of the vehicles being lifted (vans, SUVs, transporters),
- the cleanliness of the columns (brake dust, metal filings, sand in winter),
- how regularly the guide rails are lubricated,
- the temperature in the workshop.
Why hot weather makes slider blocks perform worse
In summer the workshop can reach 35-40°C, and the steel columns of the lift heat up even more from direct sunlight. The steel expands, the geometry of the gap between the column and the carriage changes, and the plastic slider blocks operate under different conditions than in winter.
If the slider blocks are already heavily worn, the effect is most audible and noticeable in summer:
- the carriage jerks when starting from the bottom,
- knocking or grinding noises appear,
- one side of the lift rises higher than the other,
- when lowering, the carriage jams in one spot.
Tip: if the problem disappears after winter and comes back with the first heatwave, that is a very strong signal that the slider blocks are near the end of their life. They still cope in cool weather, but they cannot handle the larger clearances on a heated-up column.
How to recognise worn slider blocks in the lift carriage
You do not always have to take half the lift apart to diagnose the problem. The first symptoms can be seen and heard from the workshop floor:
- uneven operation of the left and right side,
- the carriage sticking at a specific height,
- squeaking, knocking or grinding during lifting or lowering,
- visible side play of the carriage (you rock the arm - the carriage moves inside the column),
- traces of worn nylon at the bottom of the column (black or white dust, depending on the material),
- scuffing and polished metal on the inner side of the column.
Note: the same symptoms can also be caused by a damaged equalisation cable, worn pulleys, low oil in the hydraulic cylinder or a hydraulic leak. Slider blocks are the first thing to check, but not the only possible cause.
Quick test in the workshop:
- Raise the unloaded lift to about 1 metre.
- Switch off the power supply.
- Try to move the carriage by hand sideways and back/forward.
- If you feel noticeable play or hear rattling - the slider blocks are worn.
- Check both columns separately. They often wear asymmetrically.
The risks of running a lift on worn slider blocks
Ignoring worn slider blocks is not just a "cosmetic issue". The consequences go further:
- wearing down the inner side of the column (metal on metal - an expensive repair),
- accelerated wear of the pulleys and equalisation cables,
- the risk of the vehicle tilting on the arms during lifting,
- in extreme cases - the carriage seizing at height and an emergency vehicle recovery.
Replacing a set of slider blocks costs many times less than reconditioning a column or replacing a carriage.
Replacing slider blocks step by step
The procedure depends on the lift model, but the general scheme for a two-post lift looks like this:
- Lower the lift to its lowest position and disconnect the power supply.
- Remove the top cover of the column and secure the carriage with a strap/sling.
- Remove the lifting arms (if this makes access easier).
- Detach the equalisation cable from the carriage (note the tension).
- Slide the carriage out of the column - usually from the top, after removing the stop.
- Replace all slider blocks as a complete set (side, rear, guide).
- Clean the column of dust and old grease, apply new grease as specified in the manufacturer's manual.
- Slide the carriage back in, attach the cable, adjust the tension.
- Run 3-5 cycles without load, then test with a vehicle.
Note (safety): removing the carriage and working with equalisation cables and the lift hydraulics are jobs that should be carried out by an authorised service technician if you lack experience. Vehicle lifts are lifting equipment subject to periodic safety inspections required by local regulations - an improper repair can cause the lift to fail its inspection and poses a real danger to the people operating it.
Do it this way: replace slider blocks as complete sets on both columns at the same time, even if one side seems fine. Otherwise you will quickly be back to the lift running unevenly.
When to replace slider blocks preventively (instead of waiting for symptoms)
The cheapest and safest approach is to replace slider blocks preventively, during the annual service inspection. The lift is already partly disassembled, you do not lose a working day to a breakdown and you do not risk damaging the column.
Rough signals that it is time to plan a replacement:
