Sakae 22HPM-10 10 kΩ multi-turn potentiometer — measuring arm sensor for a wheel balancer
A precision 10-turn wire-wound potentiometer from the Japanese company Sakae, used in the measurement systems of wheel balancers — where the machine needs to read the arm’s position and convert it into the rim’s distance and diameter. Ten full turns instead of one provide significantly higher reading resolution, enabling the controller to detect even the slightest movement of the arm. Model 22HPM-10, an original Sakae product, body Ø22 mm.

Signs of a worn potentiometer in a wheel balancer
The resistive track wears out at the point where the arm operates most frequently — that is, at typical rim diameters. The result is always similar: the machine calculates correctly, but receives incorrect input data. Typical symptoms:
- an incorrect diameter or distance indicated by the wheel balancer after the arm is extended,
- readings fluctuating during slow arm movement — a break in the track,
- weights correctly fitted, yet the wheel remains unbalanced,
- the machine prompts you to repeat the measurement or displays a sensor error,
- the reading is correct only within part of the range, e.g. with large rims.
Why a 10-turn potentiometer rather than a standard one?
A standard single-turn potentiometer spreads the entire resistance range over approx. 300°. The multi-turn version spreads it over 3600° — ten times as long. With the same electronics, the controller therefore receives ten times more accurate information about the position of the arm, and the linearity of ±0.15% ensures that the angle–resistance relationship is uniform over the entire length. A wire element, rather than a carbon one, also offers greater wear resistance and long-term stability of parameters — which is why manufacturers of measuring machines opt for this design.
