This leads to the most important diagnostic conclusion: one direction = one microswitch. If the joystick works in three directions but not in the fourth, it is physically impossible for the whole joystick to be faulty — the other switches are clearly working. What has failed is a single part worth a few euros.

How to check whether the microswitch failed, not the whole joystick

Before you order any part, spend a few minutes on diagnostics. Disconnect the machine from the power supply and the compressed air, remove the control panel cover and get to the back of the joystick, where the wires are connected. Check the following in order:

  • Which movements are dead. One dead direction points to a microswitch. All directions dead at once usually means the power supply, a fuse, the main switch or a broken harness — in that case replacing a switch will not help.
  • The condition of the terminals. A loose, burnt or corroded spade terminal can easily look like a faulty switch. Pull the terminal off, inspect it and push it back firmly before you replace anything.
  • Continuity across the contacts. Use a multimeter in continuity mode and test the microswitch with the plunger pressed and released. No change of state when pressed means the microswitch needs replacing. A working switch also gives the typical audible click when the lever is moved.

Take a photo with your phone before you pull the wires off the microswitch. The terminals on the switch look alike and are easy to swap during reassembly — and then that direction will either work in reverse or not at all. It is the simplest way to avoid an unnecessary hour of fault-finding.

Replacing the microswitch step by step

The replacement itself takes about fifteen minutes and needs no special tools — a screwdriver, a set of spanners and a multimeter are enough. The sequence is always the same:

Joysticks on truck tire changers use several switch variants: the standard microswitch, a version with a different body and plunger shape (type B) and the CMV10 micro switch. Before ordering, compare your old switch with the photos — what matters is the shape of the housing, the spacing of the mounting holes and the type of plunger.

  • Disconnect the machine from the power supply — the joystick control circuit runs on mains voltage. The microswitches used in these joysticks are rated around 16(5)A 250V, this is not a low-voltage circuit.
  • Remove the control panel cover and unbolt the joystick mounting plate to reach the switch assembly.
  • Pull the terminals off the faulty microswitch (after taking your photo), undo the two fixing screws and take the switch out.
  • Fit the new microswitch in exactly the same position — the plunger must line up precisely with the joystick pin. Do not overtighten: an over-torqued screw can deform the switch body and jam the plunger.
  • Reconnect the terminals, check the lever movement with the power off, refit the panel and test all four directions with the machine powered up.
