Type B Guide – Switching Latch on the Tyre Changer Pedal
The Type B guide is a component of the control pedal mechanism in a tyre changer. It guides the switching pawl, which locks into position when the pedal is pressed and released. The pawl must be guided correctly to ensure that the pedal travel is consistent and that the valve or mechanism controlled by the pedal switches without jamming.
Application
This component is a replacement for the guide used in ATH-Heinl tyre changers: 460, 1460, 900, 1900, 980, 1980, M32, M52, M72 and M72Z. It is marked with the number 0412 on the parts diagram.

Signs of guide wear
- the pedal does not return precisely to its original position or requires an additional ‘tap’;
- the function is only activated after pressing the pedal several times;
- the pawl jumps out of its track, gets jammed or operates with noticeable lateral play;
- the pedal mechanism operates correctly under no load, but seizes up when the actuator is activated;
- there is uneven pedal travel and accidental switching of the machine’s functions.
A worn guide rail does not necessarily have to show visible cracks. More often, the problem begins with the wearing away of the guide surfaces and an increase in the play between the guide rail and the pawl. The pawl then becomes misaligned, and the operator’s pressure is transferred to the edges of the channel rather than along its axis.
What can damage the guide rail
- operating with a bent or jammed latch;
- excessive play in the pedal shaft or at the mechanism’s mounting points;
- jerking the pedal when the controlled valve or actuator cannot complete its full stroke;
- contaminants mixed with grease, which act as an abrasive paste within the channel;
- skewing of the guide rail after its mounting has become loose.
If the pawl continues to jam after replacing the guide, the guide itself is not the only component to suspect. Also check the wear on the shaft, pedal play, the geometry of the pawl and the freedom of movement of the control element. If you leave a worn axle in place, a new guide rail may quickly develop the same problem.
Selection and fitting
Before ordering, compare the shape of the guide channel, the hole spacing and the dimensions of the component with the part fitted to the machine. The Type B guide has two mounting holes and a central channel designed to accommodate the operation of the switching pawl.
Once fitted, check the full range of pedal movement by hand: the pawl should move without jamming and must not fall out of the channel at maximum deflection. Only after this test should you start the machine and check that the pedal switches functions correctly.
Practical tip: if the pedal starts to feel ‘soft’, has excessive lateral play or only switches functions when pressed firmly, do not wait for the mechanism to become completely jammed. At this point, the pawl is often already engaging beyond the edge of the guide rail, which accelerates wear on both the guide rail and the associated pedal components.

What cables do I need for my two-post lift?
Check the rope termination. If there are any markings on it, the total rope length is very often indicated as well, e.g., L8920. This means the rope length is 8.92 m.
Additionally, to correctly select the rope, you need to provide the following technical parameters:
- Rope diameter – measured in the middle section (e.g., 8 mm, 9 mm or 10 mm)
- Thread – diameter (e.g., M16)
- Thread – length – length of the threaded section (e.g., 14 cm)
